Not long time ago linguists started to pay attention to media texts and have made the conclusion that media is a third new power in the world. We all like to read news but sometimes it is very difficult to see the truth behind some information.

Modern media specialists use all abundances of language to express one or another point of view or to hide the implicit meaning of the media text. Reading news is a great possibility to learn Russian language and if you can read different sources in different languages you are closer to the truth behind media texts and you can make your own conclusions.

Lessons: each lesson consists of reading or watching popular media sources in Russian, analysis of the media source, identifying of media games and strategies of manipulation or of propaganda.

Discourse of tolerance in Russian language

Behavior rules, well spread in Russian speaking society, are very interesting for foreigners which come to Ukraine first time or are planning to come. Sometimes foreigners just try to copy the behavior of Ukrainians without understanding and it looks not natural.

This course has the intention to help you to get to know Ukrainian etiquette and manners.

Opening the door for woman, using the polite request «Вы» and knowing that Ukraine is not a part of USSR anymore are not everything about the tolerant behavior in Ukraine.

Lessons: each lesson consists of an introduction to specific behavior rules in Ukraine. For example: manners at the business meeting, polite manners in different social groups and table manners in Ukraine etc.

All lessons include polite vocabulary, building of polite sentences and great speeches.

For example, do you know that if your girl ordered tea for herself you have to serve her and put tea into her cup like real gentleman. This and more behavior rules at the first date we are going to share with you and will help you to have second date.

Russian movies can offer you whatever you want – horror, comedy, art house etc. In the 1980th, among 100 of the best animation films ever made the Japanese listed two Russian films, at the first and second positions.

Surzhyk is a kind of irregular pidgin that is spoken in many cities of Ukraine and Russia.

Though it is blamed for illiteracy, it still exists as everyday phenomenon. You will hear it at the markets, at the streets, in the metro… What does this strange mixed language mean? We will explain you. There are even very popular songs and books (!) written in this pidgin, fragments of which we are also going to study. They belong to the funniest texts ever written in Ukraine, though... not exactly in Ukrainian.

The history of Russian rock music

The interactive lesson «The history of Russian rock music» represents the most crucial milestones of Russian rock-movement. Participants can listen to the greatest hits of the genre and become acquainted with metaphorically deep lyrics. Come, we are waiting for you!

Songs to listen: «Я на тебе как на войне» (Агата Кристи), «Город братской любви» (Наутилус Помпилиус), «Королевство кривых» (Пикник), «Что такое осень?» (ДДТ), «Рок-н-ролл мертв» (Аквариум), «Радио Вьетнам» (Би-2).

Lectures:
  • End of 70’s – beginning of 80’s. Evolvement of full-blown rock movement. The foundation of Leningrad Rock Club.
  • In the 1980s an underground scene of rock artists emerged that based their style on a mix of Western rock music (particularly those from the 1960s and 70s but also, increasingly, those that emerged from the Western punk rock and New Wave) and the Russian bard tradition. Bands such as Alisa, Agatha Christie, Autograph, Kino, Mashina Vremeni, Nautilus Pompilius, Aquarium, Krematorij, Grazhdanskaya Oborona, Voskreseniye, Secret, Piknik, and DDT were influential in the development of the genre, with the consequent artists influenced by their style.
  • Governmental harassment in 83-85. Rock Laboratory in Moscow.
  • Presentation about regional centers: Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Ural und Ekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk), Siberia, Kiev.
  • 80’s – 90’s. Appearance of rock films. Often aired by Nashe Radio, bands like Splean, Nochniye Snaiperi, Smisloviye Galutzinatzii, Chicherina, and Bi-2 have created a refreshed Russian rock sound, which adopted many elements from Alternative rock.
  • Early 2000. Folk-rock, alternative. 2000-2016: politically- and socially-oriented lyrics (Lumen, Louna).
